Race Day

We spoke with Sail Racing athlete Tom Slingsby, who won the 34th America's Cup as the strategist for Oracle Team USA and is an Olympic Gold medallist in the Laser class, about what it would be like for the teams in these last few days of the 36th America's Cup.

Q: What are the priorities for a team in the final days?

Tom: Priorities for the team are just to be prepare everything as best they can in their area to make sure the team is ready to go.

Q: As a sailor what is the program on race day?

Tom: The program is really to focus on yourself a bit more, plenty of rest, eat well and be mentally ready to race.

Q: What are the main things discussed during the briefing on race day?

Tom: The main discussion points may be playbook manoeuvres you think may happen that day of racing and sticking together as a team and focus on performing your job as best you can.

Q: What time are you normally debriefed and ready to leave the shed after racing?

Tom: It can be a late night on race day but I doubt these guys would be leaving the shed before 9pm on a race day.
