Aussies Claim Second SailGP Title
Season 2 of SailGP ended in dramatic fashion in San Francisco after a crazy weekend of racing. With Australia and the United States' spot in the grand final already secured during the Sydney event, Japan did enough on the bay to secure their own place in the final race of Season 2 and contended for the $1 million prize.
Day 2 of racing was full of drama with multiple collisions. Spain ended their own day and almost cost the United States team a chance to compete in the grand final when the Spanish boat illegally forced their way inside close to a mark and ended on top of the US causing some serious damage to them both.
The US team missed race 5, to work on the damage and ready themselves for the all or nothing grand final. The championship race brought with it tough light conditions, multiple penalties and a race abandonment after a whale was sighted near the course. In the end, the Aussies faired best in the light conditions upon race restart beating Japan and the US comfortably.
The Aussies looked good all weekend and were consistent in shifty conditions. Ultimately they were a class above the rest, claiming the Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix event win, and $1 million with their triumph in the winner-takes-all grand final race.
